Medicinal Properties

INDONESIAN APPLICATIONS FOR BAMBOO MEDICINE:

Bamboo Species and nomenclature which are used medicinally in Southeast Asia are:

Tienge Tali is used for lung problems and female complaint
Tienge Putung, Taba and Santong -The shoots are used for internal bleeding and to encourage the milk for nursing mothers.

The shoot is sliced, soaked in lime water to soften it and then cooked as a soup with two or three slices,then Tumbar, garlic and onions are added.
Traditionally every family compound in Bali has planted the above mentioned three species of bamboo for use in religious festivals and everyday life. Other bamboos used for traditional medicine in Bali:Ph. edulis; Ph. bambusoides; Ph. nigra var. henonis; Pleioblastus amarus; Bambusa beechyana; B. omeiensis; B.tuldoides and Phyllostachys bambusoides:
All the leaves are antipyretic. New shoots are used in the treatment of hematuria (blood in the urine).

Phyllostachys edulis :
The leaves are used in the treatment of arthritic inflammations. The sheaths of the stem are used in the treatmentof nausea and sour stomach.

Phyllostachys nigra, Phyllostachys nigra henonis, and Phyllostachys nigra punctata: The leaves are antipyretic and diuretic. They are used internally in the treatment of fevers (especially infantile convulsions), vomiting and nosebleeds. The leave are harvested during the growing season and dried for later use.

The juice of the stems is antipyretic, antitussive, expectorant and sedative. It is taken internally in the treatment of lung infections with cough and phlegm.

The sap is pressed from young stems in the summer and then dried for later use. The epidermis of the stem is antiemetic (for vomiting) and sedative, used internally in the treatment of  nosebleeds, coughs etc. The epidermis is collected from young stems in the summer and is dried for later use.

The root is astringent, antipyretic, diuretic and styptic. It has been used in the treatment of rabies. The roots are harvested in the winter and dried for later use. Phyllostachys Nigra is also seen as being effective for bladder and Kidney problems and that Tabashir is used as an aphrodisiac as well as medicinally for the Kidneys.
