Seventh strongest quake in recorded history may have shifted Earth’s axis

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth’s rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 microseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. One microsecond is one-millionth of a second long.

Earthquake !

We have not discussed earthquakes on this blog in the past. The earhquake that shook Haiti on Tuesday however was felt in Jamaica. I became aware that something was wrong when the water in the Swimming pool at home began moving as if pushed by a pump (the pool pump was off)…it was a very frightening experience…more about this later.

Beginning immediately we will therfore be sharing links to expertise on Earthquakes and the possbile effect on Jamaica and what we can do to mitigate the risks associated with the occurence of one similar in magnitude to that which shook Haiti on Tuesday of this week.
