Bamboo Beer - and its Medicinal Properties

An abstract from Journal of Bamboo ResearchNo.1, 2000
Zhang Ying, Zhejiang University

The extract of bamboo leaves (Ebl) is a kind of newly -developed flavonoid nutrient. Affluent in such active components as flavone glycosides and conmarin lactones, it has biological effects similar to those of extract of Ginkgo biloba. With Ebl acting as the positive control, this study using the model of high blood-lipid of SD rats investigated the recuperative effects of Ebl, at several dosage groups, on blood-lipid metabolism. The tests showed that Ebl lowered concentration of blood triglyceride and cholesterol significantly. Furthermore, it also elevated HDL-cholesterol and decreased LDL-cholesterol depending on dosage level. Ebl and Eb displayed equal effect at the same dosage.

Bamboo beer, produced by fortifying EBL during the processing of normal beer, is characterized by a) typical aroma of bamboo leaves as well as a refreshing and mellow taste; b) abundant in bio - flavonoids and better activities of anti-free radicals and anti-oxidation; and c) excellent storage stability and lower re-ascend of diacetyl. Therefore, bamboo beer is a kind of high -quality healthy beer, which can help lower blood-lipid when consumed frequently.

BAMBOO PLYWOOD

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Let us make some Bamboo Plywood
Bamboo plywood can be manufactured from 4-6 year old organically grown and certified moso bamboo: always the perfect color, density and strength. By providing premium quality products constructed from renewable resources, we can make a difference in the future of our planet.

Rectangular strips are cut from the bamboo and then boiled to remove sugars. Only premium quality strips are selected for manufacturing into plywood. After treatment and drying, a final moisture content of 6-8% is achieved to ensure optimum stability.

These bamboo strips then undergo state of the art compression using E1-level adhesives which binds them together to form plywood. The Bamboo plywood can be left unfinished and natural so that it can be custom stained and finished for maximum project flexibility.

Modern Bamboo Woood looks no differnt from Timber Wood

Funiture is now being made from Bamboo Wood that looks no different from Timber Wood with the added benefit that  Bamboo is easier to grow and if properly done does not cause a depletion of Forrests.

At the Ministerial Workshop this was demonstrated in many ways. Bamboo in fact helps to prevent soil erosion even when cut whereas cutting down trees makes the earth more susceptible to landslides and erosion.

POVERTY ALLEVIATION

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Government played a key role in promoting bamboo industrial development in China. The Jamaican Government will need to do the following:

1. Make strategic plans for bamboo development
2. Empower farmers with land management rights
3. Provide favorable financial policies
4. Support bamboo product market establishment
5. Research and development of new technologies and new products
6. Capacity building of farmers and enterprises, technology extension

If we were to immediaely start with a policy that quality school furniture should comprise bamboo instead of timber wood and work towards that through the production of bamboo to support the policy, 9 new rural jobs would be created for every 1 job currently emloyed. The bamboo wood would look no different from timber wood and would be just as strong.
